Getting started with a Barclays Biometric Reader

Video Transcript

This short video will introduce you to the Barclays Biometric Reader, and show you how to setup the device.

We recommend watching the full video to familiarise yourself with the process, then replay, pausing at each stage, to guide you through step-by-step.

Using a Barclays Biometric Reader to identify yourself is simple and secure.

The reader recognises the unique vein pattern in your finger.

So there’s no pin to remember and no way someone else can pretend to be you.

To get started you’ll need:

  • Your Barclays Biometric Reader
  • Your Smart SIM
  • Your temporary activation PIN, which will be sent to you separately
  • And the Barclays Signing Software, which is available to download

Step 1 – software installation

First of all, download the Barclays Signing Software from the link provided on this support page. Install the software, following all on-screen prompts, then restart your computer. Please ensure you refer to the detailed installation guide before activating the download process.

Step 2 – Biometric Reader connection

Once your computer has restarted, and using the USB cable provided, insert the small USB connection into your reader and the larger USB connection into an available port on your computer.

The status indicator will now light up orange.

Step 3 – Insert the Smart SIM

Carefully remove the Smart SIM from the larger card. Ensure the chip is facing up and the cut corner is on the right. Then insert it into the slot at the front of your reader. When you hear a click, the Smart SIM is inserted correctly.

The status indicator will now turn green.

In future, if you need to remove the Smart SIM to switch a user, press it inwards, and then release. The reader will then eject the Smart SIM.

Step 4 – Finger enrollment

The reader installation is now complete and you are ready to start the enrollment process. Before you do this, let’s take a closer look at the reader and how to correctly enroll your finger.

At rear of the device you’ll see there is a recess with a yellow line. This is where you need to rest the tip of your finger when instructed to do so.

The finger should be clean and free of plasters or bandages. Keep your finger straight and your palm flat, making sure you never touch the imaging glass.

Ensure your finger tip rests comfortably on the recess at the rear of the device.

You will be reminded of these important steps during the finger enrollment process.

Step 5 – Activation

Once your software is installed and the device is connected to your computer, go to barclays.net, read and accept the security obligations and then select ‘login using Biometric’.

Onscreen instructions will now take you through enrolling your finger to complete the installation process.
